Can I buy Weed in Tenerife?

It´s legal to smoke, yes, but the sale and promotion of cannabis in Spain is still illegal. But growing for personal use (2 plants) in a private space is legal. So when you become a member of a cannabis club in Spain, you are giving permission for the club to grow on your behalf, you become part of a community of growers and smokers.

It´s legal to grow 2 marijuana plants per person in your “private space”. But it also states, if you do not have the space to grow your own herb in your own apartment / house, you may ask a friend (3rd party) to grow in their private space for you. Therefore, when you join the clubs individual membership (community) you sign papers giving permision for the club (3rd party) to grow for you. By law the clubs have to charge a membership fee of 20€, some charge more. The reason for this is to deter non smokers to start smoking or even give it a try. More on this in our History of “Cannabis Cubs in Spain” blog.

So You´re a member now and it´s time to buy some weed, but it´s forbidden the sale and promoting of cannabis blah blah zzz

The law. Cannabis associations in Spain must operate in a non for profit way. Profit is allowed, but must be seen going back into the association, for new sofas or a pool table for instance. The bills and upkeep must be paid, so everyone is expected to Contribute, or donate for the herb – towards the upkeep of the premises, the rent, lights, wi-fi, fridges and playstations and pool tables and sofas and …and …and.

This is why the herb is cheaper in Spain than Amsterdam for instance, if it’s not, your probably in an expensive tourist trap! So you have a menu and you choose your herb as normal and then the club will total it up and tell you how much you have to contribute to the club, easy.

Are tourists allowed in weed clubs in Tenerife?

Not really.

The only way that clubs can accept you legally, is if you have a resident of Spain who is also a member of that club to bring you or invite you.

Some weed clubs in Tenerife require you to be a resident in Tenerife, not just Spain. One cannabis club in the north Tenerife, Santa Cruz, requires you to be a resident in Tenerife for a min of 10 years before you can join their club.

Depending where you are in Spain, the local councils and police force have lately, taken a much more relaxed approach towards tourists and weed clubs alike, in some areas the local council issue a licence for clubs to allow tourists, extra €5k a year. But on the other hand In Valencia for instance, the police are on the alert for clubs taking tourists and actually hang about the clubs regularly stopping tourists and locals alike. They have “safety hours“ where you can transport your cannabis from the club to your house between hours where children are generally in bed.

A grey area we face everyday unfortunately, it´s only legal to posses in the clubs or in your home. we will discuss this next.

Most tourist places in Spain only in the last 2 years have become relaxed with clubs and tourists entering them, as long as it´s not too many tourists in and out all the time, (a tourist trap) they´re cool. The local authorities weigh up the options.

Am I allowed to take the weed out the cannabis clubs in Tenerife?

A question we get asked sooo often. It´s time to get serious! The Grey area. It´s only legal to posses cannabis in the private cannabis clubs or in the privacy of your own home / hotel room etc. So we have to tell you it is not legal to take away from the club, that´s the law and we have informed you, but yes you can take away, at your own responsibility. We or the club will not stop you. But is important if you want to “take away” – you must transport it in your under-ware as the police are not allowed to search there, and please… to protect the club – because the club should not allow you to exit with the herb – unless you´re smoking the herb in public the police wont stop you, but in the event they do, it is important to keep reputation of all the cannabis associations and Do Not tell them you got it from any cannabis club, it´s best to not say anything and let your documents do the talking, tell them you are a tourist, they will confiscate your herb, tell you it´s not legal and tell you to go on your way – no paperwork or fine, as they know you´ll just go home without paying, so the paperwork is left “open” – so don´t be surprised when they give you no paperwork for your herb, but if you have attitude and are rude you will surely be given a fine and told to pay now! They will escort you to the ATM!

How to become a member of a Cannabis Club in Tenerife?

A couple of ways you can do this.

1 – Contact the Clubs directly via e-mail, tel, social media or any other form of contact you can find for the club you´d like to join. This is tricky and time consuming, finding the tel number to find that it doesn´t actually work “number doesn´t exist” is actually the most common problem. Email and social media also is time consuming… unless you´re lucky you won´t get a response the same day, commonly you e-mail 10 clubs – 1 responds the same day (maybe not close by) .. 3 respond within a week.. and if you´re lucky you´ll get more responses… most common problem here is “no response” – because not many weed clubs take tourists.

2- ask a resident / friend who lives in Tenerife or has been to Tenerife to refer you / invite you. If they´re a resident in Tenerife then chances are you´ll strike gold. Why? GENERALLY speaking many tourists go to Amsterdam first and then later or even recently tourists are opting for Spain rather than Holland for a “weedcation” so GENERALLY speaking… Tourist that find themselves in what we call expensive “tourist traps” aren´t actually aware that are in an expensive spot that purely caters for tourists – may look nice and have all the bangs and whistles, but you´ll pay for this. Herb in Spain now is better quality than Amsterdam and almost half the price! This is the Spainish way… point is if you ask a tourist for a good cannabis club, it´s possible you´ll end up in one of these “tourist traps” and you also wouldn´t know it because compared to Amsterdam it´s normal. Ask a resident and he´ll know better than to entertain the Amsterdam “coffee shop” model.

3 – This is where we come in. The fastest way to access only good, reputable cannabis clubs and No Expensive Tourist Traps. We work with many clubs, we could work with all, but decide to only work with the best club in each area, so there is always a cannabis social club nearby to where you´re staying… make a reservation on our website and the club as well as ourselves (Cloud9beyond) will receive your details so they know who is coming and when. You´ll receive an invitation immediately. You can book with just 15 minutes notice. ie: choose a club and you can be inside, registered, seated smoking your herb in less than 30 minutes. Staff member meets you at the meeting point and personally takes you into the club, shows you around and introduces you. With us you can see everything, have a little smell and look around briefly before you make a decision whether you would like to join the club or not. We are very transparent because tried and frequently tested we only work with the best! For the people and With the clubs – not the other way round like Spainweedguide and our copycats TenerifeWeed (We are WeedTenerife) they work for the clubs… not the people, and if you´ve come across a website called “help to weed” i would avoid this like the plague… the cannabis clubs they have on their website are absolute poo (kakas) most of them offer free membership as they are so… err…… “not good” (edited). And you don´t pay the club for this service, you pay “help to weed” 20€ and they´ll give access to all the clubs on their website… sounds good right?

LISTEN CAREFULLY – This is the best advice you will ever receive – AS a RULE – Never pay for a membership to a cannabis club any other place than AT the club itself when you are actually there. DO NOT pay for membership online even if it´s directly to a cannabis club and it´s through the clubs official website – NEVER do it.

WHY? – 1 stly – Picture this – pay online in advance for your membership, cool, done you say. As little as a few days later you get on the plane and off you go… you land etc, off to the club… TAXI —– get to the club — oh it´s closed — police closed it last night —— police closed it last year but they didn´t take the website down and is still taking “new members” money. 2- Also you really don´t know a cannabis club – today it´s the best club, next year / next month – it´s the worst club. Also you can never be sure who anybody is.. who is “Help to Weed”? It´s possible you´ll pay them and then get rejected at clubs on their website… making a loss of money and more importantly your time!

ONLY when you get to the club, have a sniff of a little herb and look around — then decide if you want to join the club and go ahead then and pay for the membership, this gives you full control, if you don´t like the club, you can say no and go check out a different spot. Be careful.

FOR THE PEOPLE

Have a nice day!
